Jailbreaking iOS 5.1/5.1.1 (iPhone 4S, 4, 3GS and iPod/iPad)

If iTunes gives you an error while restoring (iTunes error 3194 or iTunes error 11) go here

Recently the jailbreaking community has managed to bypass iOS security and successfully create an unthethered jailbreak for the iOS 5.1 and iOS 5.1.1 thanks mainly to hacker Pod2G and his team.

Device supported for this jailbreaks are:

  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 4S
  • iPad 1
  • iPad 2
  • iPad 3
  • iPod 3G
  • iPod 4G
  • Apple TV 2
Things you will need:
  • Absinthe 2.0.2 for Windows (Download)
  • Abisnthe 2.0.2 for Mac (Download)
  • iOS 5.1.1 or iOS 5.1 from iTunes
  • Latest version of iTunes (10.6)

It is advised for you to back up your data on iTunes. Open iTunes>Right click on your iPhone name on the sidebar> Click “Back up now”

Step 1: Download the iOS 5.1.1 update if you have not done so. If you have a clean unjailbroken iDevice, it is faster if you update directly from your iDevice as the update file would be smaller.

However if your iDevice is a jaibroken one, you must perform additional step later on.

Just plug in your iDevice to your computer, open up iTunes and click on Restore. This would prompt iTunes to Restore and Update your iDevice.

If all goes well, iTunes would finish updating your iDevice without getting any error and your iDevice would reboot as clean iDevice running iOS 5.1.1. If this is the case then jump to Step 3

If you run into any error code, do not worry, just look into step 2.

Step 2: This step is intended if you have encounter any error. Mainly this error would come from iDevice that has been jailbroken prior to restoring.

Download an additional piece of software called the Tiny Umbrella (Download).

Once you have finished downloading it, open up Tiny Umbrella with your iDevice connected to your computer. First (presumably your iDevice would be displaying a graphic that instruct you to connect to your iTunes, if not, skip this) click on your iDevice on the sidebar and then proceed to click Exit Recovery.

This would reboot your iDevice to its original state.  Now on the same window, click on the  “Advanced” tab and uncheck a box that states “Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit”.

Exit the program.

Once done, you have to complete one last part on this step, that is if you are running Windows, proceed to download this file called WinFixIt (Download). This would fix your hosts file that is blocking iTunes from restoring your iDevice.

Once downloaded, open up WinFixIt and proceed with the instruction.

By now, you would need to restart your computer to apply all changes.

For Macs, go here and click on "Blocked by Configuration: (Mac OSX/Windows)" > "MacOSX"

Once done, open up iTunes and attempt to Restore your iDevice again. Hopefully now, no error code would appear on iTunes and your iDevice would be loaded with iOS 5.1.1

Step 3: Extract the Absinthe file that you have downloaded to your Desktop. Once done, open the folder and proceed to open the file named Absinthe-Win-2.0.1.exe (or Absinthe-Mac-2.0.1.exe).

This would extract another folder into the Absinthe folder. Look for it, its called absinthe-win-2.0.1. IT’S A FOLDER this time, not a program.

Open the folder and run Absinthe.exe

Assuming your iPhone is plugged in, just click on the Jailbreak button!

Let it do its thing and once done, open up your iDevice and you should see an app called Cydia if the jailbreak is successful.

Now all you need to do is restore from back up using iTunes and all your old apps and files would be loaded back into your iDevice!

If you encounter any additional error, please comment below!

Happy Jailbreaking.
